In KT, I think Sato Koichi said "I am thirsty, a cup
of cold beer would be nice." in Korean. (After getting out
of the car that kidnapped Kim Dae-jung) ^^)

Korea officially opened its door to J-Culture quite lately,
I think in 1999. J-drama and movies are not too popular but
there are quite a few who enjoy watching them. Most of the fans
are young and look for idol stars like Tsumabuki Satoshi and
of course Kimura Takuya is very popular. Sato Koichi is popular
more as good "supporting actor"to these idol stars, as in
PRIDE and SHINSENGUMI... To older generation (^^) in their
late twenties and thirties, Sato Koichi made a good impact
in Mibugishiden. 4 of his works were shown officially in
Korea, WHITEOUT, RASEN, KT and MIBUGISHIDEN. None of them
did well at box-office, though. I guess His character is
perceived as a mature, charismatic and man-like character.
Yes he is different from Korean actors like BAE
YONGJUNE or LEE BYUNGHUN. Then again, it may be that
Sato Koichi would be different from Japanese actors of
the same age group like TAKENOUCHI YUTAKA?
I personally think that Sato Koichi's Korean equivalent
would be CHE MINSIK(チェ・ミンシク). His movie OLD BOY
opened recently in Japan. It is based on a Japanese
manga and won Cannes awards this year. He looks more
old, but is about two years younger than Sato Koichi,
was a young heartthrob in 1980's, became a leading actor
with ENGIRYO in 90's and is a top-level actor now.

I was very happy to see Sato Koichi eat KANI-CHIGE
in the commercial. Thanks to this site I get news
updates very easily. His Korean is very nice. I don't
know why, but when Japanese men speak in Korean,
although they sound perfectly nice in Japanese
they suddenly turn very "GAY" and speak like a Korean
OKAMA. (e.g. Kusanagi Tsuyoshi and Morita Kandoku)
My guessing is that they are YASASHISUGI when
they speak in Korean. Sato Koichi's Korean is amazing
not only in prounciation but also in vocalization.
Not many can sound charismatic in a foreign language.
He's Korean was excellent in KT. His English was
also very good, so I think he has a natural
talent for foreign languages. You are so lucky to
have a native star like him. URAYAMASHI!!!

It's a very long story. When J-Culture first opened
up, Odoru Daisousasen was shown and I quite liked
the movie because it was very different from Korean
style of humor. So I picked Oda Yuji, ordered a lot
of his works from Japan and started to learn Japanese.
Then I got to see WHITEOUT and honestly don't remember
much of his face because he was so much hidden under
his hair and beard. But his voice was very good, so
I picked SUBARASHIKIGANA JINSEI and he was very
different there! I didn't speak much Japanese then
so had a lot of trouble figuring out the story, but
I thought he must be a very good actor to make such
turnoround. After KT (I am a big fan of SAKAMOTO
JUNJI kandoku) I became Sato Koich's big fan, dropped
Oda Yuji and started collecting his works. I like the
way he is portrayed in SAKAMOTO kandoku's movies
because he doesn't get the typically sexy character.
He is very sexy, but I feel that other directors
tend to waste his talent with unnecessary love scenes
etc, while Sakamoto Kandoku gives him lots of
opportunities to explore his talent as a good actor.
TOKAREP, KAO, KT, SHIN JINGINAKI TATAKI were all
very nice. KONIN and CHUSINGURA GAIDEN YOTSUYA
KAIDAN were good too. From dramas, KOIBITOYO was
the best I've seen yet, I am really looking forward
to its DVD release in December. TENGOKUENO KAIDAN
was also very nicely shot but the story was a little
hard to follow. I've followed most of his works
from 1995 but haven't seen much of early works.
In fact, of all the works I've seen so far I
was disappointed only once in DOKUSHIN SEIKATSU.
Lately he seems to do a lot of JIDAIGEKI.
MIBUGISHIDEN and SHINSENGUMI were both very
nice but as a foreigner there is a lot of research
to do to keep up. (^^)
